Course Description

This qualification reflects the role of individuals who use well-developed skills and a broad knowledge base in a wide variety of contexts. They apply solutions to a defined range of unpredictable problems, and analyse and evaluate information from a variety of sources. They may provide leadership and guidance to others with some limited responsibility for the output of others.

This course is offered via distance learning. The Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety aims to give students:

  • application of the current WHS Act, its regulations, Codes of Practice and Advisory Standards
  • an outline of the consequences of exposure to health hazards at work
  • an understanding of the skills required to recognise and evaluate health and safety hazards in the workplace
  • an understanding of the skills required to administer various work health and safety functions including planning, policy development participation and ethics

Entry Requirements

Pathways (articulation)

There are no prerequisite requirements for individual units of competency; however, candidates may enter the qualification through a number of entry points demonstrating potential to undertake vocational education and training at certificate level, including:

  • after achieving the BSB30715 Certificate III in Work Health and Safety or other relevant Certificate III qualification; or
  • providing evidence of competency in the majority of units required for the BSB30715 Certificate III in work Health and Safety; or
  • with extensive vocational experience in work health and safety roles

Examples of indicative job roles for candidates seeking entry based upon their vocational experience include:

  • health and safety representative
  • health and safety committee member
  • health and safety assistant

This breadth of expertise would equate to the competencies required to undertake this qualification.

Time Frame and Study Options

This accredited course can be completed in one (1) year of self-paced learning. It is recommended that you plan to complete a unit per month. Participants may complete their assignments earlier than this as this is qualification is a self-paced program. Unlimited support by email and phone is available.

Course Delivery

The Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety, delivered via flexible delivery mode, has been designed for students who want to fast track their study towards a qualification, with the flexibility of studying in their own time, at their own pace, without the need to attend classes.
This course requires independent work from the student. If you choose to do the course by online flexible delivery you are choosing not to attend these classes. But you will still need to do the equivalent amount of independent study and research to reach the same outcomes.
Assignments have recommended deadline dates and students are highly encouraged to complete assignments by those dates, so they do not fall behind.
Students will receive a package containing the study material, assignment details and research references. Students will then work through the study guide and submit assignments within 12 months.
This course is a mixture of self-paced study and the option of attending non-compulsory classes in Toowoomba. Students must complete all units within 12 months from commencement of course. 

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applicants who feel they have gained skills through formal or informal education and training, work experience or life experience, may be eligible to apply for RPL for each unit.

A Credit Transfer is when a student applies for a credit for a unit they have previously completed elsewhere. Credit Transfers are only issued if the unit is an exact match. When applying for a credit transfer, the applicant must attach a certified copy of the previous qualification, including a transcript of the course that sites the exact unit for which they are applying.

When you finalise payments and complete all course work and assessments, then The Academy of Career Training will issue the AQF Certificates or Statements of Attainment. If the Academy closes or ceases to deliver any part of this course, then we will make arrangements to transfer your assessments and course work to another Registered Training Organisation so that you can complete your qualification, or we will refund your full fees.
