Course Description:

The Operate a Hydro Excavation refresher and conversion course is tailored for participants engaged exclusively in hydro excavation, also known as Non-Destructive Digging (NDD), using a Class B gun/lance with a vacuum loading system. It offers refresher training on high-pressure pumps and vacuum systems, emphasizing safe operation, potential hazards, safe work practices, relevant legislation, work permits, and emergency response procedures. Focused solely on NDD, it does not cover washdowns, surface preparation, demolition, or other high-pressure water jetting tasks or vacuum loading operations beyond hydro excavation.

This refresher and conversion course aligns with standards and guidelines, including AS4233.1 2013 Part 1 for High-Pressure Water Jetting Systems Safe Operation and Maintenance, AS4233.2 2013 Part 2 for Construction and Performance, the WSA 02 2014 Gravity Sewerage Code of Australia, WorkSafe QLD Guide for Managing Risks from High-Pressure Water Jetting, and the Code of Practice for Work Near Underground Assets.

Who should attend this course Refresher Training: 

 

This course is designed for individuals who have previously completed MSMWJ307 and are required to undertake the mandatory refresher training before the two-year anniversary of receiving their unit of competency.

Who should attend this course Conversion Training:

​

This course covers the skills and knowledge required to address the gaps identified for MSMWJ307 - Operate a Hydro Excavation System, specifically for individuals who hold the following qualifications:

​

• MSMWJ304 - Operate a High-Pressure Water Jetting System

• MSMWJ306 - Operate a Vacuum Loading System

 

The course integrates the knowledge from both units and teaches the missing skills necessary to achieve competency in MSMWJ307 - Operate a Hydro Excavation System.

Assessment Method

​

Assessment will include online exercises with multiple-choice questions, along with a hands-on evaluation of equipment usage and a practical test focused on the operation of vacuum loading systems.

Course Content

 

• Hydro Excavation Overview:

  • Quick recap of hydro excavation principles and key applications.

  • Review of equipment components and their functions.

• Pre-Operational Checks:

  • Revisiting pre-start equipment checks, hazard identification, and risk assessments.

• Safe Operation Techniques:

  • Refresher on setting correct water pressure and vacuum levels.

  • Best practices for safely exposing underground utilities and managing debris.

• Risk Management and Safety:

  • Reinforcing hazard identification and control measures.

  • Reviewing emergency procedures for hydro excavation.

• Shutdown and Maintenance:

  • Recap on safe equipment shutdown, cleaning, and routine maintenance.

• Troubleshooting:

  • Quick review of common equipment issues and basic troubleshooting steps.

Due to the inherent risks involved in hydro excavation, Academy of Career Training strongly recommends the nationally accredited skill set training MSMSS00021 - Operate a Hydro Excavation System.

Certification

​

Upon successful completion of the MSMWJ307 Operate a hydro excavation system,  participants will receive a nationally recognised qualification. Certification will be issued once:

​

• Successfully completed all required assessment tasks

• Paid all course fees in full

• Provided all necessary supporting documentation

​

Please note that your certification will be issued within 30 calendar days of meeting these requirements, in accordance with the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) guidelines
