Course Description:

The G1, G8, G9 Mining Supervisor Course, formerly known as the S123, is an essential qualification for individuals aiming to step into supervisory roles within Queensland’s mining and resource sectors. This course equips participants with the skills and knowledge required to effectively supervise mining operations while ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations, risk management, and effective leadership on site. It is a mandatory requirement for those seeking to take on safety-critical roles such as supervisors, team leaders, and shift bosses in surface or underground mining environments.

The primary goal of this course is to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the key aspects of supervising a mining team, with a strong focus on safety, risk management, and leadership. Upon successful completion, participants will be able to:

  • Apply effective risk management processes to identify, assess, and mitigate risks.

  • Implement safety procedures and ensure compliance with Work Health and Safety (WHS) standards.

  • Lead and supervise teams to maintain safe working practices in a mining environment.

  • Communicate effectively with team members and management regarding safety procedures, incidents, and work processes.

The G1, G8, G9 Mining Supervisor Course is ideal for:

  • Individuals currently in, or aspiring to move into, supervisory or management positions within the mining and resource sectors.

  • Site supervisors, team leaders, and shift supervisors responsible for managing safety, risk, and compliance on mining sites.

  • Contractors and service providers who need to meet the legal requirements for supervising operations on Queensland mining sites.

  • Face-to-Face (Classroom-Based): A two day in-person course that combines theoretical learning with practical exercises and case studies.

  • Blended Learning (Online and Face-to-Face Practical): Participants complete theory modules online at their own pace, followed by an in-person practical assessment to demonstrate competency.

  • On-Site Training: For organisations, this course can be delivered at your location, ensuring all staff receive consistent training in line with workplace-specific safety procedures.

Course Prerequisites and Entry Requirements

 

There are no formal prerequisites for enrolling in the G1, G8, G9 Mining Supervisor Course. However, participants should meet the following entry requirements:

  • Basic Literacy and Numeracy Skills: Participants should have the ability to read and write in English and understand numerical concepts, as assessments and course materials will require a basic level of literacy and numeracy.

  • USI (Unique Student Identifier): A USI is required for enrolment in any accredited training in Australia.

Assessment Method

Participants will be assessed through a combination of:

  • Written Assessments: These include multiple-choice and short-answer questions to assess knowledge of risk management, safety procedures, and communication practices.

  • Practical Assessments: Participants will be required to demonstrate their competency in conducting risk assessments, health and safety investigations, and effective communication on-site.

Course Content

The G1, G8, G9 course covers three core units of competency, each designed to address specific supervisory responsibilities and safety protocols:

  1. G1 – RIIRIS301E: Apply Risk Management Processes

    • Introduction to the risk management process.

    • Identifying, assessing, and controlling hazards in a mining environment.

    • Development of effective risk control measures and monitoring their effectiveness.

  2. G8 – RIIWHS301E: Conduct Safety and Health Investigations

    • Understanding and conducting workplace health and safety investigations.

    • Reporting, recording, and responding to workplace incidents.

    • Gathering and analysing information to develop investigation reports.

  3. G9 – RIICOM301E: Communicate Information

    • Effective communication within a mining environment.

    • Reporting safety incidents and communicating operational instructions.

    • Ensuring clear and concise transfer of information across teams and stakeholders.

 

Certification

Upon successful completion of the G1, G8, G9 Mining Supervisor Course, participants will receive a Statement of Attainment for the following nationally recognised units of competency:

  • RIIRIS301E – Apply Risk Management Processes

  • RIIWHS301E – Conduct Safety and Health Investigations

  • RIICOM301E – Communicate Information

 

This certification is valid for five years, after which participants will need to undertake refresher training to maintain their qualifications and ensure compliance with current safety standards.

Please note that your certification will be issued within 30 calendar days of meeting these requirements, in accordance with the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) guidelines.
